Racism In Football
EDM number 1647 in 2002-03, proposed by Tony Banks on 08/09/2003.
That this House deplores the racist chanting and abuse by supporters of the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia against black English footballers in the FYROM v. England match in Skopje on Saturday 6th September; calls upon UEFA to take exemplary action against FYROM and those countries where such racist abuse has become common place; reminds UEFA that their enthusiastic threat to expel England from Euro 2004 in the event of crowd trouble stands in stark contrast to their less than rigorous action to drive racism out of European football which is itself a far more invidious problem; and calls upon UEFA and FIFA to end the playing of national anthems before international matches which merely provides an opportunity for rival supporters to insult each other and stoke up feeling of hostility.
