Flight Between Taiwan And China

EDM number 619 in 2002-03, proposed by Lindsay Hoyle on 30/01/2003.

That this House welcomes the historic charter flight from Taiwan to China operated by Taiwan's largest airline, China Airlines, made on Sunday 26th January, the first direct flight from Taiwan to China in 50 years following the civil war in 1949; recognises the important economic links between the two countries with estimates showing that Taiwanese have invested ú100 billion in China combined with the fact that there are about 500,000 Taiwanese on the mainland on any given day; and looks to these experimental flights to become a permanent feature and help work towards a peaceful co-existence between Taiwan and China.
