Single Equality Act
EDM number 723 in 2002-03, proposed by Joan Ruddock on 12/02/2003.
That this House welcomes the Government's consultation on the future structure of equality institutions in the United Kingdom, Equality and Diversity: Making it Happen; recognises that the experience of 25 years of anti-discrimination laws is that legislation needs to be modernised to support the delivery of equality as well as focusing on individual acts of discrimination; recognises that the existing framework of equality legislation is complex and inconsistent; supports the view of the EOC, CRE, DRC, Stonewall and Help the Aged that legislation needs to be consistent across the equality strands to enable employers, service providers and individuals to understand it and use it effectively; and calls upon the Government to bring forward a draft single equality bill for introduction in this Parliament.
