National Deafblind Awareness Week, 19th-27th June 2004
EDM number 1209 in 2003-04, proposed by Tim Yeo on 17/05/2004.
That this House congratulates Deafblind UK for organising National Deafblind Awareness Week, which is taking place between 19th and 27th June this year; recognises that losing either one's sight or hearing is a tragic loss but that people who lose both face a great disability; notes that approximately 24,000 people in the UK are deafblind; congratulates those taking part in all the events including the Red and White Stripe Day in which people will be dressing in red and white, to symbolise the colours of the cane which many deafblind people use everyday, to raise money and generate awareness for the issue; also congratulates those taking part in a helium balloon launch on Monday 21st June across the country; and wishes all participants well in the competition to see whose balloon travels the furthest.
