Escalation Of Terrorism In Bangladesh

EDM number 1605 in 2003-04, proposed by Sally Keeble on 07/09/2004.

That this House, noting the concerns of United Kingdom citizens, especially those of Bangladeshi origin, condemns the assassination attempt on the Bangladesh parliamentary opposition leader Sheikh Hasina on 21st August, which resulted in 24 deaths and 33 people seriously injured, including five members of parliament, at a public rally in Dhaka; notes with concern the deteriorating law and order situation and the rise of terrorism, as evident in the deaths of more than 1,400 people in the last three years and a series of bomb attacks, including the one on HM High Commissioner to Bangladesh in May; calls for an investigation into these incidents; and calls on the United Kingdom Government to offer such assistance and co-operation as may be necessary to help combat terrorism, and to promote, assist and reinforce rule of law, including measures to protect the life of Sheikh Hasina and other opposition leaders and to ensure security for the citizens in this Commonwealth country of 150 million people.

This motion has been signed by a total of 49 MPs.
