40th Anniversary Of The University Of Essex

That this House congratulates the University of Essex at Colchester on the 40th anniversary of the admission of its first students in September 1964; notes with approval that the number of students has grown from 122 in its first year to the 9,762 who are expected to be enrolled for the coming academic year; further notes that Essex is Britain's most international university outside London with students drawn from 125 countries; welcomes the recent opening of campuses in Loughton and Southend; pays tribute to the founding Vice-Chancellor, Sir Albert Sloman, his successors Professor Martin Harris and Professor Ron Johnston and current Vice-Chancellor Professor Ivor Crewe for establishing and developing Essex as one of the leading research universities in the UK; and wishes the University of Essex continued success in the years ahead.
