That this House congratulates Wangari Maathai on her outstanding achievement as the first African woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize; recognises her unswerving commitment to the environment, sustainable development and democracy; notes her pivotal role in establishing the Green Belt Movement in Kenya, which since its inception in 1977 has planted more than 30 million trees across the country; notes the contribution this movement has made to grass roots development in Africa through education, family planning and the fight against corruption; and unequivocally applauds the decision of the Nobel Committee in making this award.
