Closure Of Innsworth, Churchdown And Leckhampton Post Offices

EDM number 1742 in 2003-04, proposed by Laurence Robertson on 14/10/2004.

That this House condemns the plans to close the post office branches of Innsworth, Churchdown and Leckhampton in the Tewkesbury constituency; believes that the decision represents short-term thinking, in that hundreds more houses are being proposed for Innsworth; further believes that the decision will increase traffic movements in already busy areas at a time when the Prime Minister himself is expressing concern about climate change; regrets that very many older people, parents with young children, people with disabilities and carers will be inconvenienced by these closures; is concerned that the public consultation on these proposals was nothing more than a smokescreen exercise, as the objections raised by very many people have been ignored; and recognises that the blame for the closure of so many post offices up and down the country belongs to the Government, due to the changes it has made to the way it pays benefits and pensions.
