Presidential Elections In Ukraine
EDM number 1752 in 2003-04, proposed by David Amess on 15/10/2004.
That this House urges Her Majesty's Government to communicate with the Government of Ukraine the importance which the British Government attaches to free and fair Presidential elections in that country on 31st October, and on 21st November if a second round is required; expects unimpeded access to the media for all candidates; believes that the Electoral Commission Chairman must be impartially appointed and that civil servants and public funds should not be used for campaign purposes; urges the Government of Ukraine to implement the corrective actions proposed by the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe dated 15th September; is insistent that observers from international organisations as well as official British observers are deployed to verify the election process throughout Ukraine; calls on the Government of the UK to emphasise that British law does not impede the voting rights of Ukrainian citizens in the UK which should be freely exercised without hindrance; and pledges its support for the people of Ukraine to reinforce the establishment of democracy, the rule of law and human rights in Ukraine.
