UK Railway Heritage And The Flying Scotsman

EDM number 754 in 2003-04, proposed by Greg Knight on 02/03/2004.

That this House notes that 2004 marks the 200th anniversary of powered railway movement in Britain, when a steam locomotive owned by Richard Trevithick at the Peny-Darren Ironworks ran along parallel rails for the first time; further notes that 2004 is also the centenary of the first 100mph run by the locomotive City of Truro; notes with pride that the British A4 steam engine 'Mallard' still holds the world speed record for a steam locomotive after reaching a speed of 126 miles per hour on 3rd July 1938; recalls that the first locomotive to break the 100mph barrier between Leeds and London was the famous steam locomotive, the Flying Scotsman, in 1934 and that this locomotive continued working on our railways until 1963; is deeply concerned that the Flying Scotsman may this year be sold overseas; and calls on both the Government and the Heritage Lottery Fund to take urgent steps to ensure that this national treasure remains in Britain at the National Railway Museum in York.

This motion has been signed by a total of 83 MPs.
