Global Education And Awareness In 2005 And Beyond

EDM number 391 in 2004-05, proposed by Tom Brake on 14/12/2004.

That this House notes that in 2005 the UK will preside over two of the world's most important mulitlateral forums, the G8 and the European Union; believes that this presents a unique opportunity for the UK to take a lead in facilitating international action in response to global problems including world poverty; recalls the Government's and the international community's commitment to the Millennium Development Goals which will also be reviewed in 2005 and which will fall due in 2015; commends the plans of international development organisations to campaign for the UK to help make poverty history in 2005; further notes the opportunity that 2005 poses for increasing the British public's awareness of and interest in global issues; and calls on the UK Government to declare 2005 a national year for development awareness and to develop a plan for a decade of development awareness in the lead up to 2015.

This motion has been signed by a total of 42 MPs.
