Food Labelling For Vegetarians And Vegans

EDM number 955 in 2004-05, proposed by Tony Banks on 17/03/2005.

That this House enthusiastically supports the British consumers' right to make an informed choice when purchasing and consuming food; recognises that the UK's three million vegetarians and vegans face many more hurdles and misleading labelling than the average consumer; notes with concern that the Food Standard Agency's Strategic Plan for 2005 to 2010 does not acknowledge the plight of vegetarians and vegans; and calls on the Government not only to introduce and promote good practice guidelines for the term `suitable for vegetarians' but also to ensure that such guidelines are supported by clear targets and regular monitoring so that clear, honest food labelling is available to all consumers.

This motion has been signed by a total of 56 MPs.
