National Service Framework For Chronic Lung Disease
EDM number 1099 in 2005-06, proposed by Howard Stoate on 23/11/2005.
That this House supports the calls made by the Chief Medical Officer and the British Lung Foundation for a National Service Framework on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD); regrets that COPD affects an estimated three million people and causes more than 33,000 deaths a year in the UK; notes that of the £800 million plus annual costs to the NHS for COPD, 84 per cent. is associated with secondary care; further notes that effective management of COPD in the community can reduce the number of emergency hospitalisations and, where admission is unavoidable, reduce the number of bed days; and urges the Government to prioritise this highly debilitating condition to ensure the best treatments and services are available to patients.
