Diabetes Week 2006

EDM number 2364 in 2005-06, proposed by Edward Davey on 14/06/2006.

That this House welcomes Diabetes Week, taking place between 11th and 17th June; notes with concern that the number of people diagnosed with diabetes in the United Kingdom has already reached 2.1 million and is expected to reach 3 million by 2010, and that diabetes is now in the top five most common non-contagious diseases in the United Kingdom and is one of the main threats to human health in the 21st century; further notes that diabetes deaths are predicted to rise by 25 per cent. over the next decade and that people with diabetes are five times more likely to die from heart failure as those without diabetes; congratulates Diabetes UK for the positive work that the organisation has undertaken to raise awareness of the rising threat of diabetes and associated diseases; and calls on the Government to ensure that the NHS at a local level provides diabetes care and support in line with the standards set out in the National Service Framework for Diabetes.

This motion has been signed by a total of 60 MPs.
