Promotion Of Science By The Royal Society Of Chemistry

EDM number 580 in 2005-06, proposed by Brian Iddon on 13/07/2005.

That this House congratulates the Royal Society of Chemistry on taking imaginative initiatives aimed at encouraging young people to study science; notes that the Society has launched an initiative, supported by the Government, to send a copy of A Short History of Nearly Everything by the celebrated author Bill Bryson to every secondary school in the country; further notes that the Society, in conjunction with Heston Blumenthal, chef at the Fat Duck, recently voted the world's best restaurant, has published Kitchen Chemistry, a resource book for schools, which is also being sent to every secondary school in the country to encourage school students to study the science of food; further notes the departure of the Society's Chief Executive Dr David Giachardi CChem FRSC on Friday 15th July after five years in the post; applauds Dr Giachardi's enormous contribution to the Society since 2000 during which he has led the Society to great success in many different spheres of activity; and welcomes the considerable contribution that the Society continues to make to strengthen the dialogue between Parliament and the science and engineering community on scientific issues.
