Visit Of President Papadopoulos Of Cyprus
EDM number 625 in 2005-06, proposed by Edward O'Hara on 19/07/2005.
That this House welcomes the visit of President Papadopoulos of Cyprus to London on 26th July for a meeting with the Prime Minister; notes that this is the first official visit of President Papadopoulos to the UK since his election in February 2003; is mindful that Cyprus and the UK are bound together by history, many bonds of friendship and a common respect for democracy and human rights; trusts that the discussions between the President and the Prime Minister will focus on the need for a renewed effort together with interested partners and under the auspices of the UN to find a viable and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem which is acceptable to both communities in Cyprus and consistent with the basic principles of international law and the status of Cyprus as a member of the European Union; and calls upon the Government as a guarantor power to take the lead in working for a solution based on the reunification of Cyprus as a bizonal, bicommunal federal republic.
