World Asthma Day 2007
EDM number 1380 in 2006-07, proposed by Derek Wyatt on 30/04/2007.
That this House welcomes Asthma UK's report `The Asthma Divide: Inequalities in emergency care or people with asthma in England' launched on World Asthma Day 2007; notes with concern the shocking regional differences in emergency admissions for the 4.4 million people with asthma in England; further notes that people in North-West England are 65 per cent. more likely to need emergency hospital treatment for asthma than those in the East of England and that there can be a difference of more than four times in the rate of hospital admissions for asthma attacks between neighbouring primary care trusts; regrets that there were over 67,700 people admitted to hospital experiencing an asthma attack in England in 2004 and that 75 per cent. of such admissions are preventable; calls on the Government to end this postcode lottery through increasing the provision of asthma specialists, care plans and asthma reviews; and congratulates Asthma UK's support for healthcare professionals through their emergency asthma care pack to help ensure that all people with asthma receive the best possible treatment, regardless of where they live, to prevent them being seen in an emergency situation.
