Remploy Modernisation Plans

EDM number 2032 in 2006-07, proposed by Adam Price on 08/10/2007.

That this House believes that Remploy workers offer a significant contribution to the local economy and communities in which they are based; sees the role of Remploy not only as a business employer but as a way of offering social and economic assistance to individuals who otherwise would not have the opportunity to take an active role in the community; expresses deep concern at proposals by Remploy to close seven of its Welsh factories; agrees with the trade unions that there is a continued need for supported employment and that mainstream employment is not suitable for everyone; notes that Remploy workers have often made the conscious decision to work rather than spend a lifetime on benefits; and especially thanks the workers in the Remploy factory in Brynamman which has provided an excellent service to the community since 1950.
