Lighter Evenings

EDM number 484 in 2006-07, proposed by Tim Yeo on 12/12/2006.

That this House believes that the introduction of single/double summer time, involving putting the clocks forward to GMT + 2 in summer and GMT + 1 in winter, would reduce accidents and cut deaths and serious injuries on the roads, especially among children and other vulnerable people, would reduce peaks in electricity demand and thereby cut the level of generating capacity that has to be maintained, would reduce the amount of energy consumed by households thereby saving money and reducing carbon emissions and would confer a range of social and other benefits on British people; and therefore welcomes the introduction, with cross-party support, of the Energy Saving (Daylight) Bill, which would introduce a three year experiment with single/double summer time while allowing the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh and Northern Irish Assemblies a separate vote on the issue.

This motion has been signed by a total of 80 MPs.
