Mothers In The Labour Market
EDM number 1105 in 2007-08, proposed by Diane Abbott on 04/03/2008.
Categorised under the topics of Child care, Employment and Equality.
That this House is concerned by recent research into the work that mothers are carrying out in the UK labour market; notes that the research finds that women with children are much more likely to undertake part-time than full-time work; further notes that due to the current nature of part-time work, these women are forced into lower skilled jobs; believes that this represents a waste of the qualifications, skills and experience of professional women; further believes that women should not have to sacrifice job status and responsibility when also bringing up children; and calls on the Government to legislate for flexible working for parents of young children.
