That this House notes with sadness the sudden passing away of Kanta Patel, who was a tireless, courageous and deeply committed campaigner against racism and injustice promoting equal opportunities and racial harmony both in her home borough of Greenwich and in communities across the UK; further notes her own personal struggle against racial discrimination directed towards her by the far right; recognises and pays tribute to her selfless service as a Greenwich borough councillor since 1986, in which she made a huge difference to people's lives by promoting education, sport and culture to raise aspirations and opportunities amongst the most socially disadvantaged communities; further recognises her achievements as Chair of the ALA Race Equality Committee between 1990 and 1992; pays glowing tribute to her enthusiasm and zeal for the Black Section cause within the Labour Party and her commitment to the establishment of the Black Socialist Society; honours her for the work with the Gujarati Samaj Group and for her weekly column in the national newspaper Asian Voice, in which she championed her cause to tackle poverty and give vital advice to those who needed it; acknowledges that her contribution to local politics in her area and her determination to build a better world will be remembered fondly by all those who had the privilege of knowing her; and offers deepest sympathies to her family and everyone who worked with her and knew her.
