Minister For Construction Industry

EDM number 989 in 2007-08, proposed by Richard Younger-Ross on 20/02/2008.
Categorised under the topics of Central government, Industry and Ministers.

That this House recognises the importance to the UK economy of the construction industry, with over 250,000 construction firms employing 2.1 million people and contributing 8.2 per cent. of the nation's GDP; further recognises the role the industry has in providing employment for every skill level from labourers to architects as well as providing the opportunity to work for every size of firm from family run businesses to major contractors; understands that the industry's efficient operation and competitiveness is essential to the fulfilment of the Government's commitment to improve public services and infrastructure and that the delivery of new schools, hospitals, affordable housing and eco-homes all depend on the success of the construction sector to deliver; notes with concern that there have been seven Ministers with responsibility for construction since 1997; and therefore supports calls from the Federation of Master Builders and others for the appointment of a dedicated Construction Minister to act as a champion for the construction industry, both within and outside government.

This motion has been signed by a total of 45 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
