DWELLY'S GAELIC DICTIONARY ONLINE

EDM number 456 in 2008-09, proposed by Angus MacNeil on 14/01/2009.
Categorised under the topic of Cultural heritage.

That this House welcomes the availability online of the nineteenth century Scottish Gaelic dictionary by Edward Dwelly, commonly known as Dwelly's, at www.dwelly.info; notes that it is regarded as the first authoritative work in lexicography in Gaelic; further notes that Edward Dwelly was a Gaelic learner who was originally from Arundel in England and additionally welcomes the work of Gaelic learner, Will Robertson and Michael Bauer, the latter originally from Germany, in their efforts in preserving and developing one of Europe's oldest vernacular languages by putting Dwelly's dictionary online; and encourages hon. Members to see the speed and efficiency of this online resource for themselves by checking that the words `snow' and `dram' respectively have far more than a dozen possible translations.
