Nat Lofthouse

EDM number 1300 in 2010-12, proposed by Laurence Robertson on 18/01/2011.
Categorised under the topic of Sports.

That this House notes with sadness the passing of former footballer Nat Lofthouse at the age of 85; remembers him as a true legend of the game and a sporting icon; believes that he did as much as anyone to put Bolton Wanderers and the North West on the footballing map of the world; further remembers the two goals he scored to win the FA Cup for Bolton in 1958, which was the last time they won the Cup; recalls that he was also an outstanding goalscorer for his country, scoring 30 goals in 33 appearances, which remains one of the best scoring rates in English international footballing history; further remembers that he was a one-club player and remained closely connected with Bolton Wanderers for over 50 years after he stopped playing; further recalls with affection that, even as a player, he often travelled to matches on the bus and held a part-time job as a paint salesman even when at the peak of his career; further remembers Nat as a gentleman; and believes that he was truly worthy of his nickname, The Lion of Vienna.
