Procurement Of Electric Multiple Unit Rail Vehicles For Southern Railway

EDM number 2554 in 2010-12, proposed by Joan Ruddock on 19/12/2011.
Categorised under the topics of Manufacturing industries and Railways.

That this House welcomes the decision of the Secretary of State for Transport to bring forward the procurement of approximately 130 additional electric multiple unit rail vehicles for Southern Railway; notes the additional capacity for passengers that this will create on one of the busiest rail corridors in south London and the South East to the benefit of the economy and the environment of this region; believes that the procurement of the new trains should incorporate lessons learned from other recent train orders where the wider socio-economic benefits to the UK from indigenous design and manufacture have not been taken into account; and calls on the Government to ensure that this order is placed in such a way as to ensure the greatest possible benefit both for passengers on the route and for employment in the country's high technology train manufacturing businesses predominantly located in the Midlands.
