Cancer Research UK

EDM number 1124 in 2012-13, proposed by Alan Meale on 27/02/2013.
Categorised under the topics of Charities, Diseases and Research and innovation.

That this House is aware that in the UK every year around 325,000 people are diagnosed with cancer and more than 157,000 die of the disease; notes that the charity, Cancer Research UK spent 332 million last year alone across Britain, funding over 4,000 doctors, nurses and scientists employed working on more than 200 different types of cancers, efforts which have helped with others double patient survival rates in recent times; is alarmed to learn that despite this magnificent contribution towards finding a cure whilst aiding the delivery of care to sufferers, the charity receives no government funding for its work, it instead being totally reliant upon the overwhelming generosity of the public towards its financial needs; and urges the Government to reconsider its position on this not least by giving serious consideration to the recent report published by the Office of Health Economics which has established that substantial benefits both for UK medical research and the wider economy are derived from acts of genuine collaboration between charitable and Government funders.

This motion has been signed by a total of 32 MPs.
