Proposal For A Children-In-war Remembrance Day

EDM number 294 in 2012-13, proposed by Barry Gardiner on 28/06/2012.
Categorised under the topics of Children and families, Human rights and Military operations.

That this House acknowledges the plight of children during wartime; remembers those children evacuated from the UK to various overseas countries during World WarsI andII as well as those in recent conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Sierra Leone, Kosovo, Libya and Syria who have suffered, and who continue to suffer loss, injury, distress, displacement and psychological trauma as a consequence of war; recognises that children have moved from a passive to a more active role in conflicts, sometimes being forced to become soldiers; calls for the Government to adopt 20 November as a Children-in-War Remembrance Day in order to bring the plight of children in war zones, past and present, into the public domain, that day being the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by the General Assembly of the United Nations; and commends the efforts of the trustees of the War Child Memorial Project in erecting a permanent memorial to such children.

This motion has been signed by a total of 27 MPs.
