Otley And Cycling

EDM number 554 in 2012-13, proposed by Greg Mulholland on 15/10/2012.
Categorised under the topic of Sports.

That this House notes that Otley has become a nationally recognised centre for cycling; welcomes and supports the town's local cycling events, the annual Otley Town Centre Races, which since the first elite race in 1985 continues to grow year on year, the Otley Cycling Festival, organised for the first time this year by Otley Cycling Club, and the Otley Sportive cycling event, which promotes the continued interest and enthusiasm in cycling in Otley as well as raising money for excellent local charities; further notes the outstanding achievement of Otley's Lizzie Armitstead in achieving Otley's first ever Olympic medal with a silver in the women's road race at the London 2012 Olympic Games, which has encouraged widespread local interest in the sport and established it as significant to the local community; and further notes the importance of ensuring that the legacy of the London Olympics is delivered by providing a platform by which those inspired by the Games may get involved in sports at a local level and continue to promote the town of Otley as a famous cycling town.
