Death Of Savita Halappanavar

EDM number 744 in 2012-13, proposed by Virendra Kumar Sharma on 20/11/2012.
Categorised under the topic of Medical ethics.

That this House supports the widespread condemnation of the Irish authorities over the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar; proposes that, regarding a patient where, there is complication or risk of death, religious views do not take precedence over medical need; believes that an independent inquiry should be commissioned into the medical negligence that caused the premature demise of a young, healthy woman; and implores hon. Members and the Government to put pressure on the Irish government to make changes to current legislation concerning abortion to allow abortion in circumstances where the mother's life is at risk.
