Motorway Speeds

EDM number 81 in 2012-13, proposed by Caroline Lucas on 17/05/2012.
Categorised under the topic of Roads.

That this House is opposed to plans to create 80 mph motorways; notes that research shows 80 mph motorways would result in 25 deaths and 100 serious injuries across Great Britain every year; further notes that the Committee on Climate Change showed it would result in 2.2 million tonnes of additional carbon emissions each year; believes that both such outcomes are unacceptable; congratulates No to 80, the coalition of road safety and environmental organisations, set up to highlight the detriments of 80 mph motorways in Great Britain; and calls on the Government to abandon proposals to increase the speed limit and instead set out how it will further the principles of preventing needless, devastating and costly crashes and reducing carbon emissions using the best evidence available.

This motion has been signed by a total of 14 MPs.
