Mend Our Mountains Campaign

EDM number 1322 in 2015-16, proposed by Greg Mulholland on 23/03/2016.
Categorised under the topics of Countryside and Leisure.

That this House addresses the financial needs of our national parks and particularly the rights of way network and maintenance of upland paths for continued enjoyment of these areas; welcomes the British Mountaineering Council's campaign Mend our Mountain as an innovative way to raise much needed funds to repair key mountain paths in eight of the UK's national parks and notes the enthusiastic response to this campaign from the outdoor community; recognises however that this campaign is a one off, and that local authority and national park cuts have severely reduced investment in walking and recreational infrastructure; believes that promotion of outdoor opportunities, as set out in the recent Department for Culture, Media and Sport's vision Sporting Future: A New Strategy for an Active Nation should go hand-in-hand with an investment in infrastructure and support for the UK's most treasured landscapes so future generations can continue to enjoy these areas sustainably; acknowledges that the response to the Mend our Mountains campaign to date is testament to the depth with which the public care for the UK's mountain paths within some of the UK's most beautiful landscapes; and calls on the Government to reflect this in its policy, and give a greater focus to supporting sustainable informal activity and the infrastructure to support this.
