Irish Broadcasting

EDM number 305 in 1998-99, proposed by Austin Mitchell on 10/02/1999.

That this House notes the high quality and wide appeal of Irish broadcasting and commends the contribution its availability in the UK via TARA Television is making to British-Irish understanding during this time of unprecedented improvement in British-Irish relations; notes the progress TARA is making in accessing the British market and commends Sky Television for including them in their initial digital line up; further notes that many cable distribution companies are still failing to recognise the high quality and popularity of Irish television and in so doing are depriving many people from all walks of life of the chance to experience new and diverse entertainment from Ireland; commends the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport for his commitment to quality and diversity in broadcasting; and further commends him for his desire to allow new and independent services to prosper in the digital age.
