National Strategy For The UK Textile And Clothing Industry

EDM number 484 in 1999-00, proposed by Judy Mallaber on 07/03/2000.

That this House acknowledges the valuable contribution to the United Kingdom economy made by the textile and clothing industry which remains the eighth largest manufacturing industry in the country employing over 300,000 people; notes the continuing job losses in the industry but recognises there are opportunities to develop further in areas such as innovation, branding, niche marketing and diversification; believes that Government support and promotion of the domestic textile and clothing industry is crucial for its future success; welcomes the publication of a National Strategy for the United Kingdom Textile and Clothing Industry drawn up by industry representatives in consultation with the Department of Trade and Industry; and urges the industry and Government to take all necessary steps to implement the recommendations set out in the strategy.

This motion has been signed by a total of 93 MPs.
