World Cup 2006

EDM number 950 in 1999-00, proposed by Laurence Robertson on 11/07/2000.

That this House regrets FIFA's decision to favour Germany with the hosting of the 2006 World Cup, with that country having hosted it as recently as 1974; considers that England would have been a good host country, but that an emerging democracy such as South Africa would have gained great benefit from having the privilege of hosting the tournament; believes that wider considerations than football should be taken into account when deciding on the hosts for the tournament; is concerned by the reports of attempts to improperly influence the voting of the FIFA members; and calls for a full independent inquiry into the allegations and the overall system of awarding the World Cup.

This motion has been signed by a total of 24 MPs.
