Free Personal Care
EDM number 1528 in 2001-02, proposed by Paul Burstow on 01/07/2002.
That this House welcomes the introduction of free personal care in Scotland for people over the age of 65; notes with disappointment that Ministers in Westminster have dismissed the idea, despite the fact that 118 of their own backbench honourable Members have written to the Department of Health to complain about the English scheme of so-called 'free' nursing care; further notes that the Welsh scheme for care is also more generous than the English system; and calls upon the Westminster Government to implement free personal care for the whole of the UK as set out in the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Long Term Care to prevent frail and vulnerable older people in England being treated like third class citizens.
