Nuclear Plant Discharges
EDM number 984 in 2001-02, proposed by Jimmy Wray on 12/03/2002.
That this House urges the British Government to stop immediately the discharges into the sea from the nuclear plant Sellafield in north-west England; believes that it is unacceptable to discharge considerable amounts of the long-lived radioactive element Technesium-99 directly into the marine environment, when the waste could be stored until a process to remove it is introduced; agrees with the protests of neighbouring states, such as Ireland and the Nordic countries; recognises that the British Environment Agency has agreed to continue to allow the discharges until 2006; and hopes that the Government will reconsider this and stop the discharges as soon as possible.
