World In Sight Glasses Appeal

EDM number 993 in 2001-02, proposed by Paul Marsden on 12/03/2002.

That this House congratulates the World in Sight charity, run by Help the Aged, for their glasses appeal, which has collected over one million pairs already of unwanted spectacles that have been sent to developing nations to be re-used; notes with alarm that the number of people suffering deteriorating sight will more than double in the next 50 years of which 80 per cent. of this growth will be in developing countries; notes that ophthalmic projects in Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Mali Mauritius, Mozambique, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe currently benefit from the glasses appeal and require further spectacles to help those with poor eyesight; and urges people with unwanted glasses to deposit them in Dolland and Aitchison branches and Help the Aged shops or wrap and post them directly to the World in Sight Appeal, Freepost Lon13109,London N1 9BR.
