Communications Bill

EDM number 1564 in 2002-03, proposed by Tony Baldry on 09/07/2003.

That this House welcomes the amendment of the House of Lords to Clause 3, section 1, of the Communications Bill which gives Ofcom a principal duty to further the interests of citizens and of consumers; recognises that this has been a consensual matter, having been recommended by the cross-party joint scrutiny committee, spoken for by honourable Members from four parties in Committee, supported by 118 honourable Members who signed EDM 299 in this session, and voted for by peers from the three main parties and from none; welcomes the Government's previous flexibility on this matter at Third Reading; and urges the Government to retain both the principal duty to further the interests of citizens and of consumers and the use of the word citizens in this clause.

This motion has been signed by a total of 43 MPs.
