Acquired Brain Injury:provision Of Rehabilitation
EDM number 433 in 2002-03, proposed by Brian Iddon on 18/12/2002.
That this House welcomes the recent Government publication of the Green Paper, Pathways to work: Helping people into employment, and its commitment to introduce ground breaking rehabilitation programmes; considers that successful support and vocational programmes, such as those run by Rehab UK play a vital part in helping people who are living with an acquired brain injury get back to work, thereby increasing their social independence, their quality of life and making long term savings to the Exchequer; is concerned that a lack of support from statutory agencies is creating severe funding problems which are likely to impact on existing rehabilitation services available to those who sustain an acquired brain injury; is therefore very concerned to note that Rehab UK is faced with serious funding problems which may force closure of its current rehabilitation centres when, in order to adequately address the needs of the growing brain injured population in England and Wales, as many as fifty similar centres are required; believes that there must be improved co-ordination and communication between local agencies and Government departments; and urges the Government to undertake a review of the provision of acquired brain injury rehabilitation services within the UK with a view to introducing a national funding structure ensuring that the burden of financial support for rehabilitation and vocational support services does not rest entirely with the charitable and voluntary sector.
