British Gas And Student Safety
EDM number 1369 in 2003-04, proposed by Syd Rapson on 21/06/2004.
That this House congratulates British Gas on its campaign regarding student safety, particularly concentrating on the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning, a gas which is odourless, colourless and can be produced when natural gas or any other fossil-fuel appliance is operating incorrectly usually due to incorrect installation or lack of regular maintenance; is concerned that 53 per cent. of students in private rented accommodation had not been shown a gas safety certificate when they started their tenancy; and calls for a mandatory installation of British Standard approved, audible carbon monoxide detectors in all rented accommodation and that all gas appliances have safety checks by competent qualified engineers which will help to keep those in private rented accommodation safer than they are today.
