Mis-Selling Of Landline Telephone Services
EDM number 1420 in 2003-04, proposed by Richard Allan on 30/06/2004.
That this House welcomes Ofcom's consultation on protecting consumers from the mis-selling of fixed line telephone services; notes, whilst recognising that the majority of the telecoms industry competes in a fair and proper manner, the increasing number of instances where customers have cause to complain about sales techniques and their experience of being transferred between one provider and another, often without their knowledge or proper consent; further notes the figures published recently by BT showing the scale of the problem, with more than 14,000 reports of apparent mis-selling in March alone and regularly around 10,000 a month since December 2003; further notes Ofcom's acknowledgement of the scale the problem reached in the energy industry; and calls upon Ofcom to act decisively to ensure that the same does not happen in the telecoms industry, through establishing adequate consumer protection, with the minimum requirement being the introduction of a properly enforced mandatory code of practice with effective sanctions against those that employ such underhand sales techniques.
