Paediatric Continence Services
EDM number 952 in 2003-04, proposed by David Drew on 31/03/2004.
That this House congratulates ERIC (Education and Resources for Improving Childhood Continence) for providing the only national resources to support children with continence (wetting and soiling) problems, their parents and health professionals; note that wetting and soiling affect over one million children and young people over the age of five years in the United Kingdom, an average of one in 12 children; further notes that over 30 per cent. of parents punish their children for these treatable conditions, as was highlighted in the Victoria Climbie inquiry, and that there is an association between these conditions and with bullying in school; further notes that, despite some models of good practice, paediatric continence services in the United Kingdom are inadequate and inconsistent, with some children not receiving effective treatment, and that there is an urgent need for the Children's National Service Framework to include clear standards for paediatric continence, with the requirement for every primary care trust to provide access to an integrated paediatric continence service; and urges the Government to model this on the very successful standard for continence services in the National Service Framework for Older People.
