China
EDM number 1021 in 2005-06, proposed by Lindsay Hoyle on 14/11/2005.
That this House condemns the Chinese government for the poor animal rights standards within China; notes in particular the brutal treament of bears who are held at bear farms where bile is removed either through permanent catheters or during operations and is used for traditional Chinese medicines even though herbal and synthetic alternatives are available; further notes the poor human rights record in China, in particular its treatment of Tibet and its religious intolerance where millions of people are restricted from practising their faith; and calls on the Chinese government to bring its laws and practices into the 21st century in relation to animal rights, human rights and religious tolerance.
