Campaign To End Fistula
EDM number 2536 in 2005-06, proposed by Lorely Burt on 10/07/2006.
That this House supports the work of Renew, the Campaign to End Fistula, which has highlighted the dangerous and horrific injuries suffered by hundreds of thousands of women in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia; notes that Fistula occurs during obstructed labour where the embedded dead foetus causes tissues between the mother's bladder, rectum and vagina to die resulting in leakage of faeces, urine or both; further notes that young girls hardly into puberty can be socially ostracised, cast out and left to beg in the streets; further notes the link with poverty as a root contributor towards obstetric fistula and maternal mortality and that without action Millennium Development Goals will remain unmet; applauds the work of governments throughout Europe to support the Renew campaign; and urges the Government to do the same.
