ALZHEIMER'S AWARENESS WEEK 2005
EDM number 362 in 2005-06, proposed by Andrew Lansley on 20/06/2005.
That this House supports Alzheimer's Awareness Week, which runs from 3rd to 9th July; notes that the theme of this year is younger people with dementia, which seeks to challenge the assumption that dementia affects only people over 65 years of age; notes that there are 750,000 people in the UK with dementia and that over 18,000 are under the age of 65; further notes that younger people with dementia require specialist services appropriate to their needs; calls upon the Government to address the shortcomings of services for younger people with dementia, which do not adequately meet needs; congratulates the work of the Alzheimer's Society, which provides care and support to people with dementia and their carers; and acknowledges the Alzheimer's Society's anxiety as it awaits the decision of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence on its draft guidance to withdraw drug treatments on the NHS for people with Alzheimer's disease.
