Cancer Of The Skin
EDM number 414 in 2005-06, proposed by Ian Gibson on 27/06/2005.
That this House expresses its concern at the growing risk of melanoma due to climate change and other factors, and the continuous rise in melanoma among young adults and teenagers; notes that this cancer is incurable, most often fatal, and the need for an effective treatment for this condition is all the more urgent; notes with concern that work on a promising pioneering treatment of melanoma, developed at laboratories at University College London, has been suspended for nearly a decade because the College feels unable to offer a proper academic post to the principal investigator, who is an internationally respected scientist; notes that the College is currently the only site in the UK that can adequately support the work; and urges the Departments of Health and Education to do all they can to ensure that this situation is resolved satisfactorily and immediately, and that this work is allowed to continue, properly funded, in the interests of patients, present and future.
