Fair Trade And Ethical Labelling
EDM number 898 in 2006-07, proposed by Lynne Featherstone on 19/02/2007.
That this House believes that, under the right conditions, trade can lift millions out of poverty; further believes that fair trade issues will never improve unless international efforts such as economic partnership agreements (EPAs) and those proposed by the Doha round are successful and take into account the needs of developing as well as developed countries; urgently calls on the Government to press not only the EU but also the United States to be more pro-active in reconvening the Doha trade talks; recognises the power of the consumer's choice in supporting fair trade; but urges the Government to raise awareness of trade issues amongst UK consumers and citizens by encouraging a better labelling system allowing the consumer to make an informed decision when buying goods.
