Strasbourg Demonstration On Nato 60th Anniversary

EDM number 1087 in 2008-09, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 13/03/2009.
Categorised under the topic of NATO.

That this House notes the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Baden Baden and the Heads of State gala dinner in Strasbourg on 3 and 4 April to mark the 60th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation; further notes that peace campaigners from 19 countries, united in their desire to highlight public opposition to NATO's war in Afghanistan and military interventions elsewhere and in their belief that NATO's nuclear weapons should be disarmed and military spending drastically reduced, will be holding a peace summit, which includes a peaceful demonstration, in the city of Strasbourg on 4 April; is dismayed at the recent announcement by the Strasbourg authorities that they do not intend to allow such a demonstration to take place; reaffirms its support for the basic democratic right of all citizens freely to express their views; recognises that such rights embrace the right peacefully to demonstrate, including on the important occasion of the NATO anniversary; and expresses the hope that the No to War, No to NATO demonstration will be allowed to go ahead.
