University Marine Biological Station Millport

EDM number 894 in 2012-13, proposed by Katy Clark on 08/01/2013.
Categorised under the topics of Marine environment and Research and innovation.

That this House is deeply concerned that University Marine Biological Station, Millport, which has been operational since the late 19th century, could close; notes that the University of London is currently the custodian of the facility and that a decision is pending by the University's Board of Trustees on the future of this national asset; recognises that the station is used by universities, schools and others in Scotland, England and Wales, as well as institutions outside the UK, providing marine biology field course teaching and facilities; further notes that the Marine Station is unique in being able to offer a range of interesting and diverse marine habitats in extremely close proximity to the Station and is ideally situated for marine biological teaching and research; further recognises that the Station is the second largest employer on Millport after the NHS and that most of its staff live on the Isle of Cumbrae; welcomes the contribution to the island economy of residents and visitors alike with an overall regional impact said to be around 2 million per annum; believes that if the Marine Station were to close the impact would be devastating on the island community of Cumbrae; further believes that it is vital that a way is found to secure the future of the facility; and calls on the UK Government and the Scottish Government to work together to ensure the future of the Marine Station.
