Live Animal Exports

EDM number 60 in 2013-14, proposed by Mike Hancock on 13/05/2013.
Categorised under the topics of Animal welfare, Animals and Shipping.

That this House is extremely concerned that the live export of animals to continental Europe has resumed from the port of Dover for the first time in two years, despite widespread opposition from the British public; is aware that a recent YouGov poll revealed that two-thirds of the public would prefer British farm animals to be slaughtered in the UK and exported as meat; calls on the Government to ban the export of live animals to continental Europe; notes with concern that in September 2012, 46 sheep drowned or had to be euthanised on the quayside in Ramsgate; further notes that in 2011 Portsmouth City Council was able to deter the export of live animals through the introduction of a levy; and urges the Secretaries of State for Transport and for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to amend the outdated Harbours, Docks and Piers Clauses Act 1847 to allow ports authorities in the UK the right to refuse any ship involved in such activities the use of its port.

This motion has been signed by a total of 34 MPs.
